Surge Protective Device (SPD): What It Is, How It Works, and Why You Need One

The modern home is full of sensitive electronics — televisions, smart devices, washing machines with electronic controls, computers, photovoltaic inverters. Each of them can be destroyed in seconds by something you cannot see: a surge.
A surge arrester (also known as an SPD — Surge Protection Device) is the device that stands between the grid and your appliances. In this article, you will learn exactly what it is, how it works, and — most importantly — whether you need one in your home.
What is a surge?
The normal voltage in a household grid is 230 volts. Under certain conditions, however, it can spike for an extremely short period — up to thousands of volts. This situation is called an impulse surge or lightning/switching surge.
There are two causes:
- Lightning — it doesn't need to strike your home directly. A strike on a utility pole down the street can send a surge through the cables to your outlets.
- Switching processes — switching of transformers by the power company, starting heavy machinery (compressors, elevators), even switching off powerful appliances in your home.
Most surges in the home network are not due to lightning, but to switching processes within the installation itself or the grid. They are more frequent but weaker — and still slowly damage electronics.
How does a surge arrester work?
An SPD is connected in parallel in the electrical panel — it is always "listening" to the voltage. During normal operation, it does nothing and does not affect the installation.
However, when the voltage suddenly jumps above the permissible level, the SPD "activates" for an extremely short period — literally nanoseconds. It diverts the excess energy directly to the ground, before it reaches your appliances.
Imagine it as a safety valve: it stays closed under normal pressure, and when there's a spike — it opens and safely releases the voltage.
SPD Types — T1, T2, or T3?
The standard defines three types, mounted at different locations in the installation:
- T1 (Class I) — Main panel / after the meter. Protection against direct lightning strikes. Typical impulse current: 12.5–25 kA (Iimp).
- T2 (Class II) — Distribution panel. Protection against residual surges from the grid and indirect strikes. Maximum current depends on the specific model (Imax).
- T3 (Class III) — Near a specific appliance / outlet. Protection against residual surges from the installation. Up to 10 kA.
For most homes: installing a T2 in the distribution panel is the standard and sufficient solution. It provides protection for the entire installation with one device.
What do the parameters mean?
When choosing an SPD, you will see several numbers. Here's what they mean:
- Imax (kA) — The maximum discharge current the device can handle. A higher number means stronger protection.
- In (kA) — Nominal discharge current — the value at which the device has been tested multiple times (at least 15 times according to the standard). A higher In means a longer SPD lifespan.
- Up (kV) — Residual voltage — how much "passes through" after activation. A lower value is better.
- Uc (V) — Maximum continuous operating voltage — usually 275 V for European grids.
- 1P+N — One phase + neutral conductor — standard configuration for household panels.
How is an SPD mounted in the electrical panel?
Step 1 — DIN rail mounting
The device is mounted on a DIN rail in the electrical panel — next to the circuit breakers.
Step 2 — Connect the phase (L)
The phase conductor (L) is connected to the corresponding terminal of the SPD.
Step 3 — Connect the neutral (N)
The neutral conductor (N) is connected to terminal N.
Step 4 — Grounding (PE)
A direct connection to the grounding (PE) is mandatory — without it, the SPD cannot divert the energy.
Step 5 — Circuit breaker
An automatic circuit breaker with a C curve, 25A is installed before the SPD, unless it is built-in.
Most SPDs have a visual indicator (green/red window) by which you can immediately see if the device is functional or has "blown" after a strong surge.
Who is it recommended for?
- House / villa in an area with thunderstorms — highly recommended
- Photovoltaic system at home — recommended (consult the system designer)
- City apartment with a lot of electronics — recommended
- Old panel apartment without expensive equipment — recommended when replacing the electrical panel
- Office / small business — highly recommended
How much does protection cost?
A good T2 SPD for a household panel costs between 30 and 80 BGN. Installation by an electrician — another 20–40 BGN.
For comparison: replacing a burnt-out washing machine costs 600–1200 BGN, a TV — 800–2500 BGN, a refrigerator — 700–1500 BGN. A single surge can destroy all appliances in the home simultaneously.
An SPD is insurance for your electronics. You pay once, and it works for you for years.
How to choose the right SPD?
For a standard household electrical panel, look for:
- Type: T2 (Class II)
- Configuration: 1P+N (for single phase)
- Imax: minimum 20 kA
- DIN rail mounting
- Status indicator
