What is a WAGO connector and when is it used

Connecting wires in electrical installations is a task that requires reliability and speed. WAGO connectors have become a standard for many electricians precisely because they meet both requirements.

What is a WAGO connector?

WAGO is a brand of German spring-lever terminal connectors that allow wires to be connected without tools and without soldering. Instead of tightening a screw, the wire is inserted into the connector, and a spring mechanism automatically and securely grips it.

Types of WAGO connectors

The most common are from the 221 series – universal connectors with levers, suitable for solid, stranded, and fine-stranded wires. They are available in 2, 3, and 5-port versions, as well as an inline variant for direct connection of two wires in a straight line.

When are they used?

WAGO connectors are ideal for:

• Connecting wires in junction boxes
• Installing light fixtures
• Repairing existing installations
• Locations where quick and repeated disassembly is necessary

Advantages over traditional methods

Unlike twisting and taping or porcelain caps, WAGO connectors provide constant contact pressure from the spring. This reduces the risk of loosening over time and of transient resistance, which can cause overheating.

What to pay attention to?

It is important to choose a connector with the correct wire range. The standard 221 series covers cross-sections from 0.14 to 4 mm², and the specialized variant for thicker wires supports up to 6 mm². Always check the permissible current – standard WAGO 221 connectors are certified for up to 32A at 450V.
